A<strong> diverging<\/strong> color scheme is ideal, but you do not know the second color to pair against your client\u2019s designated color.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">This situation happens with the Pantone 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pantone#Color_of_the_Year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Color of the Year<\/a>. As noted in my January 2022 writing, P<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pantone.com\/color-of-the-year-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri<\/a> was announced as Pantone\u2019s 2022 Color of the Year. Stepping beyond its twenty-one tradition of selecting a Color of the Year from its existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pantone.com\/color-systems\/for-graphic-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pantone Matching System (PMS)<\/a>, Pantone created the new Very Peri color for 2022.&nbsp; I want to have a Very Peri diverging color scheme handy to depict data trends related to happenings during the 2022 year. In this writing, I describe my journey to create a Very Peri diverging<strong> <\/strong>scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/yxYM-I2e1I0SUqGTfxu6XLVlZ1sNPwk_cHO0du_9iXvKdqFHV25frYds8MIZMr17GQmDQItEwCpldRKBmIUhlZ7RyJ_kbDcRNdkUX5_6g9W1h5KBAetzXIFZGS_kEglA-BlirNHq\" alt=\"\" width=\"271\" height=\"314\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">The Pantone 2022 Color of the Year \u2013 Very Peri<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A typical <strong>diverging <\/strong>scheme pairs a sequential progression of two different hues that are separated in the middle by a shared light color. In my earlier article on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/dvsnightingale.wpenginepowered.com\/very-peri-pantone-2022-for-your-visualizations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Very Peri Pantone 2022 for Your Visualizations<\/a>,\u201d I created a <em>Very Peri <\/em>sequential color scheme. The next steps in progressing toward a diverging color scheme are to: (1) find a second color to pair with <em>Very Peri<\/em>; (2) build a single hue sequential progression based on this second color, and (3) fuse the <em>Very Peri<\/em> and second color sequences together with a light color midpoint to create a diverging color scheme. Let\u2019s get started by remembering some basics about color schemes for data visualization and related color harmonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Color schemes for data visualization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Colorizing tools for data visualization classify color schemes according to three types of data: sequential, diverging and qualitative. Cynthia Brewer initiated these concepts with <a href=\"https:\/\/colorbrewer2.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ColorBrewer<\/a> and diagramed the color scheme types in her <a href=\"http:\/\/personal.psu.edu\/cab38\/ColorSch\/Schemes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cColor Guidelines for Mapping and Visualization\u201d<\/a> writing.&nbsp;Sequential color themes are designed for ordering numeric information where colors progress from low to high (or vice versa). Diverging color schemes emphasize quantitative data that progresses outward from a central neutral midpoint to two different color extremes. Qualitative color schemes are designed for coding categorical information when there is no designated ordering of the data and colors should receive equal perceptual weight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/0Sfsv29gTjRzAP0h1sXWIVv0NBDQv4zKqZCJrwSjUDG2tVHiXtEvDsj6nle-6iU5fIVD6X_ndf43o9NXnk0XPknCNOt2_Axec0h2K9dDGf0oVcYrem1a8t4yD31mDiPbuz49RBNV\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Cynthia Brewer\u2019s mapping of color schemes according to sequential, diverging, and qualitative<strong> <\/strong>data types<strong>.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In this writing, I am building a diverging color scheme with the new <em>Very Peri<\/em> color. Returning to the <em>Very Peri<\/em> color scheme I built in my <a href=\"https:\/\/dvsnightingale.wpenginepowered.com\/very-peri-pantone-2022-for-your-visualizations\/\">previous <\/a><em>Nightingale<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/dvsnightingale.wpenginepowered.com\/very-peri-pantone-2022-for-your-visualizations\/\"> article<\/a>, this sequence included four colors that progressed from light to dark. The colors noted by their hex codes are #DFDFF7, #9496F7, #6667AB (Very Peri), and #484978. A quick note to those unfamiliar, a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Web_colors#Hex_triplet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">color hex code<\/a> is a hexadecimal way to represent a color in RGB format. This <em>Very Peri<\/em> sequential color scheme is shown below.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/R7C6qJ97P522aaLH1E86pNBrCEluB7c0hDuDSDhUUehqidMlG-SEIS67oAdam-H_2uVnuuY_R1BnhpyVuFQI6uUvAhhvu8PRytu3ISq9cVAtJHWrBn4hFNfHrHmkTWTq06WailjC\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">The Very Peri sequential color scheme built in my previous <em>Nightingale<\/em> article.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to this <em>Very Peri<\/em> sequence, my objective here is to search for a second single hue color sequence to contrast with the <em>Very Peri<\/em> sequence and complete the resulting diverging<strong> <\/strong>color scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The concept of Color Harmony<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/7GX1sEDohuUGRys9hlcZ_AZ0CjUz_zbOjExIWXYQARH2Fa_L7RIHaB8ghNev2hxZiCkCE3IZeb-aPqtNbFXwdP0SAznHCKqOlnOjeDziLRiBLLemBDzaJFdM0fcqVfBagnsNojsU\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Isaac Newton\u2019s Original Color Circle or Wheel concept published in the early 1700s. I added the color swatches to note the colors he diagrammed.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Color Harmony is the process of choosing colors on a color wheel that work well together in the composition of an image. Similar to concepts in music, these harmonies are based around color combinations on the color wheel that help to provide common guidelines for how color hues will work together. This set of visual fundamentals evolved from <a href=\"https:\/\/library.si.edu\/exhibition\/color-in-a-new-light\/science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Isaac Newton<\/a> closing the linear color spectrum into a circle in the early 1700s. Over the centuries, artists and color scientists <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webexhibits.org\/colorart\/ch.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">amplified<\/a> his concept to include color harmonies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two common and frequently used color spaces for building color wheels are the traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/emptyeasel.com\/2007\/03\/16\/using-the-color-wheel-color-theory-tips-for-artists-and-painters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Red-Yellow-Blue (RYB)<\/a> color space used by painters for centuries and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baslerweb.com\/en\/sales-support\/knowledge-base\/frequently-asked-questions\/what-is-the-rgb-color-space\/15179\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Red-Green-Blue (RGB)<\/a> color space frequently used for desktop and mobile display devices. Each color space yields slightly different <em>Color Harmony<\/em> results when colorizing a visualization. Below, I show a comparison of the two differing color spaces using the complementary harmony for the <em>Very Peri<\/em> family of purples below. A complementary color harmony refers to two colors that oppose each other on the Color Wheel.&nbsp; The color opposite purple on the RYB color wheel is yellow while the color opposite purple on the RGB color wheel is yellow green.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/xRlJiHglXbZIUj6ELvUbaBIpz04E7cL14lzSFkedbm5EbrDZpuDmGmKYHoCyM6esc9_udhLSIzP_xL-udcVq8sZ8GXvwd9xDI-yvA5vGDgJgEQ-jZhLRvSH1nxUl6A5mwQBWROzT\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">The Red Yellow Blue (RYB) \u201cPainters\u201d and the Red Green Blue (RGB) \u201cDisplay\u201d color wheels with the complementary color to the Very Peri family of purples shown. For RYB, the complement is yellow. For RGB, the complement is yellow green.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>One approach to finding the second color for my <em>Very Peri<\/em> diverging color scheme would be to either use a color in the yellow (RYB complement) or yellow-green (RGB complement) families. In a previous <em>Nightingale<\/em> piece, I showed how to build a diverging color scheme from a complementary color harmony. Let\u2019s use a similar approach here and see what the Pantone Connect tool might officially recommend as the complementary color in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pantone.com\/color-systems\/for-graphic-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pantone Matching System<\/a> (PMS).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using the free version of Pantone Connect<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pantone&nbsp; recommends going to <a href=\"https:\/\/connect.pantone.com\/#\/trending\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pantone Connect<\/a> to obtain the RGB and Hex codes for <em>Very Peri 17-3938<\/em> as well as view its color harmonies. It is asked that you register with your email to access the \u201cfree\u201d version of Pantone Connect.&nbsp; After doing that, Pantone Connect appears. Clicking on the digital <em>Very Peri<\/em> color swatch yields the screen shown below. Clicking on the <em>Color Data<\/em> item provides the RGB 102,103,171 and Hex #6667AB codes. Currently, since <em>Very Peri 17-3938 <\/em>is a newly created color, this is the best method to locate these color codes. To assist me in creating a <em>Very Peri<\/em> diverging color scheme, I also searched&nbsp; for Pantone\u2019s complement to the <em>Very Peri<\/em> color. This was found by clicking on the <em>Harmonies <\/em>item also noted below.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/icOuo8UC1M_q1g-AALqmWnnEx_jycC3ZuT98aTXO0Msf_N3je4zVe36ptTSFjynRng2-R3Z_WOfWxfn3TP13DJbXLwcYJSnVqT1YWk3jQ9p_kDc147A7fxErE34vpBjyvt3F4LMt\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Accessing Pantone Connect to explore the Pantone Color Harmonies for Very Peri 17-3938.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Pantone Connect indicated the complementary color was <em>Sweet Pea 15-0531<\/em>. Below I show the results of selecting <em>Harmonies<\/em> in Pantone Connect. After examining <em>Sweet Pea 15-0531, <\/em>a yellow-green color, I decided that I did not want to create my <em>Very Peri diverging<\/em> scheme with the <em>Sweet Pea<\/em> color. This forced me to consider another strategy. For the <em>Very Peri diverging <\/em>scheme, I required a second color that contrasted with <em>Very Peri,<\/em> but the second color did not have to be the exact complementary color.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I began to examine other colors noted in the listing of <em>Harmonies<\/em>. I decided to select a green color to contrast with <em>Very Peri<\/em> for my diverging color scheme. Pantone Connect listed \u201cGreen Tea\u201d as a split complementary color and \u201cShamrock\u201d as a Triadic color. I selected <em>Shamrock 15-6432<\/em>. I show these results below.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/6n0o5d-RyEe1fhH_1p21htxbJlHdzUz0zP2OkPnHqmAbjTqZOB1Ehyp2en3mThWZObRoiU7_tQB3M0kYzjIE1j8C_9LeXPA23UoU5zXX2S-FDkdWB-s2Joqzta2SorjCMkHamI0E\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Using Pantone Connect to locate the Pantone Complementary Color to Very Peri named Sweet Pea. I decided I prefer the Pantone Shamrock color instead.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When I selected <em>Color Data <\/em>for the Pantone\u2019s Shamrock 15-6432 color, Pantone Connect asked me to consider the \u201cpaid\u201d version of its color suggestion tool.&nbsp; Since I want to remain with the \u201cfree\u201d version, I decided to perform a Google search for the Hex code of Pantone\u2019s Shamrock 15-6432 color. Since Shamrock 15-6432 was inventoried in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pantone.com\/color-systems\/pantone-color-systems-explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pantone Matching System<\/a> (PMS), I was confident a Google search would find the Hex code. The Google search indicated #77A670. I show these results below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/FjPmA_zGCT8rY7ujRGnn9AKIkorcScsZ8p5KhHFsL8-7vTirRZ-nARGw9Ozcnc3z-AlrrJHCcxEUGikF4WEZzSS53qpkTh2paqD_c21Eo7PmmIL6ne7bAJQjaIW18v_qJsKCz3cf\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Using Google search to find the Hex code for Pantone\u2019s Shamrock 15-6432 color. The result is #77A670.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To be a little more visually confident of this result, I performed a Google search on the color hex code #77A670.&nbsp; This search provided an image with the RGB (119, 166, 112) numbers and other color data for hex code #77A670 that matched up with Pantone Shamrock 15-6432. These results are shown below.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/5EHZ1si9bUiTmrtNyup1kZAc-fTiFpmMHVaU3SxYLoKgNV4Q8WFiuuKcYeo9piePtSdUP5PrEdoH6CKPJkRPY915kixfpMd96LLoNAKY-f1M14jF18GS9RgIyVmay0XUnuPX0Hmv\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Using Google search to find additional color codes for #77A670 &#8211; Pantone Shamrock 15-6432. The RGB code is 119, 166, 112.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building my Shamrock color sequence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Using my previous approach for building the <em>Very Peri<\/em> color sequence, I created the <em>Shamrock <\/em>color sequence with Adobe Color. My first step was to build a monochromatic color harmony. As noted in a previous <em>Nightingale<\/em> writing, a monochromatic color harmony combines one hue (a 100 percent saturated color) with various tints, tones and shades of that hue to create a color scheme. A tint is defined as a hue mixed with White while a tone is designated as a hue mixed with Gray and a shade is created when a hue is mixed with Black. Similar to <em>Very Peri<\/em>, <em>Shamrock <\/em>is actually a tone in this monochromatic color harmony. I show these results below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/X0U3JWC_EPZyNSdcxKK1rOxtrsfjdBuBi5IDHkardirqzSQIhLMyO-N6TgquMU9Jo6_3KInVjzgf9t-gV6YK3gIQRWHsuxpWSV_Ex3rQ2Qb7FCUBv-Y9uAttkVq-LqwpiobADS7x\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Conceptualizing the Shamrock Monochromatic Color Harmony with a Hue, Tint, Tone, and Shade.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Color Wheel, a monochromatic Color Harmony consists of colors that form a straight line from the center of the wheel to the outside edge of the wheel.&nbsp; My first step in creating the <em>Shamrock<\/em> monochromatic harmony was to access <a href=\"http:\/\/color.adobe.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Adobe Color<\/a> and select the Monochromatic color harmony.&nbsp; My results are shown below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/7-gYgh1bPh5WQnEmEAN0CQBH6qE3FyYXvh4z-J1uruwx6BCAXNtvmTL_oyXb9NoW4uZpsut84sxke8_aiOWvijzoz1q6mGGVT3lChCPOimZcWpAJcKsM2weodj8mlZHkZeHBFna5\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Starting with Adobe Color and selecting a Monochromatic Color Harmony.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I then entered <em>Shamrock\u2019s<\/em> Hex code of #77A670<em> <\/em>as the center color in the set of five colors. This resulted in a <em>Shamrock Monochromatic<\/em> color harmony as shown below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/rVgEP-ytMwxnA1TunJp0bK49Pgpmk6UfCcRuO_jCNyNXwki89vbmd9SsrxWRf80X3O66xDddKWvSd5FE7aVKcxqTR8FWg5JkAnG9T92lTcLQNFgrLSyUgC_7NTcHDQAT41YV3mvg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">The Shamrock Monochromatic Color Scheme in Adobe Color.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>My next step was to position the <em>\u201cShamrock Mono\u201d<\/em> color scheme into a sequence as shown below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/aEYnxgvmPg9pM0o0XtygMXWQG_sOAmtT0VrrV6zVhSp4D4xejE3hJhnRSq8CfIOrKtdCcWtpOHnjAYe2ZM4hkkid64bAOUsKwT8fRwTKZIZMx5I5glX9Gf2qYcXRQv5yDouJ524m\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Repositioning colors to create a Shamrock Mono color sequence.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I then eliminated the remaining Green color to yield a four class single hue sequential color scheme with the Hex codes noted as #ADF2A2, #52B543, #77A670 (Shamrock), and #52734D. I named this color scheme \u201c<em>Shamrock Sequence<\/em>\u201d and show these results below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/goCp9BdzrfLwcWCQcmdx4oxeH3XJJmFK3l3crkGBmaCRa7JekGeqG4pfT4HLRE5voMkSEJ1EaZdpJOy89KJkb6Q0g8Hspnm-aiYASkaBIXp4XaAz3UdeeRDZMV9s0CUxP-k5osqA\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Eliminating the remaining green color to build a systematic light-to-dark Shamrock sequence.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The result was a <em>Shamrock Sequence <\/em>of colors that was a single hue sequential color scheme. Below, I show the sequence outside of the Adobe Color tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/893LU4ClAPKGnxTiA26-apActOHG-N_1Kym-PDl14pfJrbZOrWi1BmYedDxrHzQyx2VNBoJTewrqdsmb7lim0OIr_uMQEK75IPzV1HVBYw8fD3eboHEqjujzQdRtq7EgBjlQmG_H\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">The resulting Shamrock single hue sequential color scheme.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;Joining Very Peri and Shamrock sequences for a diverging color scheme<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>My next step was to join the Very Peri and Shamrock sequences together for a diverging color scheme. I also required a midpoint color. I decided to make this color White (#FFFFFF). To add the midpoint color, I returned to Adobe Color and the <em>Shamrock Sequence<\/em>. I selected the \u201cCustom\u201d option under \u201cColor Harmonies\u201d. This allowed me to replace the eliminated Green color with White (#FFFFFF) and shift the <em>Shamrock Sequence <\/em>to the right.&nbsp; I show these results below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/FBwWoElMuZsxs7kDKkZdxit1RH_xV6EsZBJkYUOLmn_r_2LBfkgNOA-l4D8I0kR5loart8CrFszC-ZNTgFh17QQ1eX5QzTRXK6LO7UrfFY_aXfnysBcEy1snu-2LuXO7Vfv_JNFz\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">Using Adobe Color to add White (#FFFFFF) to the Shamrock sequence. White (#FFFFFF) will become the midpoint of the final diverging color scheme.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I then combined the <em>Very Peri sequence<\/em> and the <em>Shamrock sequence<\/em> with a <em>White midpoint<\/em> together. To do this, I flipped the direction of the <em>Very Peri sequence<\/em>. This allowed both sequences to transition from light to dark at the <em>White midpoint<\/em>. These efforts yielded a nine-step diverging color scheme. The ring diagram of this process is shown above. Some modifications might result.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>I decided to use this process to apply <em>Very Peri diverging <\/em>to an area chart visualization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Applying <em>Very Peri diverging<\/em> to a data visualization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Establish data classes for visualization and key color for visualization<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>For my example, I had sales data for four regions over a six-month period. Regions 1 and 4 had comparable products while Regions 2 and 3 had comparable products. To emphasize this relationship, I wanted to create an area chart with Regions 1 and 4 having negative values below the X-axis and Regions 2 and 3 having positive values above the X-axis. Since Adobe Color required five colors in its array, I placed the White Midpoint as the final color on the right while using the color suggestion tool. Adobe Color required an array of five colors so the White Midpoint is moved to the right as the end color in the sequence.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>4. &nbsp; &nbsp; Check and revise due to color deficiency, contrasts, or any pre-existing conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As noted in my prior <em>Nightingale<\/em> writings on color, humans have three types of photoreceptors or cones. Each is sensitive to different parts of the visual spectrum of light to facilitate rich color vision. A red cone deficiency is classified as Protanopia. A green cone deficiency is classified as Deuteranopia. A blue cone deficiency is classified as Tritanopia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adobe Color provides \u201cColor Blindness\u201d accessibility checks for evaluating their five color themes. If the color theme does not pass color deficiency checks, the colors in the theme can be repositioned to pass the checks.&nbsp; I used these functions for my <em>Very Peri Diverging<\/em> color scheme.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To find the \u201cColor Blindness\u201d checks, I selected the \u201cAccessibility\u201d option and located the \u201cColor Blind Safe\u201d function. Some modifications might result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, I&nbsp; apply my four step <em>Very Peri Diverging<\/em> color scheme to an area chart of the sales data. As a result, I used the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.color-blindness.com\/coblis-color-blindness-simulator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Color Blindness Simulator<\/a> (Coblis) software to run a final color deficiency check on the area chart visualization. Although individuals with color deficiencies will not view my actual color scheme design, they can distinguish four different colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Concluding remarks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/oXckTqgIcZPQS6MLRwGfcOqvx7-tcJhy71pfrMGEQ1MG-rvBeuRrDnX5ElVxBWgrtA5zslXyRkjqPunvC3mYaIGQOyhQ-cmt5TBVm9t-s80GyKb0AqnBkZlvaLNxvucTNALbAFHF\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">The nine-step version of my Veri Peri Diverging with Shamrock color scheme.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As shown above, I now have a diverging color scheme based on <em>Very Peri 17-3938<\/em>, Pantone\u2019s 2022 Color of the Year. This adventure started with my previously created <em>Very Peri <\/em>sequential color scheme and involved the search for a second color to pair with <em>Very Peri<\/em>. Pantone\u2019s <em>Shamrock 15-6432<\/em> became that second color. A diverging<strong> <\/strong>scheme pairs a sequential progression of two different hues that are separated in the middle by a shared light color. My journey encompassed building a <em>Shamrock sequence<\/em> to contrast against the <em>Very Peri sequence <\/em>and selecting <em>White <\/em>as the midpoint color in my diverging sequence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The freely available <a href=\"https:\/\/color.adobe.com\/create\/color-wheel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Adobe Color<\/a> tool for building color schemes and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.color-blindness.com\/coblis-color-blindness-simulator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Color Blindness Simulator<\/a> (Coblis) for checking color deficiency helped me along the way. I used the free version of <a href=\"https:\/\/connect.pantone.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pantone Connect<\/a> for reference information regarding the color harmonies for <em>Very Peri <\/em>and its #6667AB color hex code. Pantone Connect required me to use its paid version for the color data of <em>Shamrock. <\/em>Fortunately, a Google Search yielded #77A670 as Shamrock\u2019s color hex code. Using my <em>Process of Colorizing a Data Visualization<\/em>, I applied <em>Very Peri Diverging<\/em> to an area chart visualization example.There are many ways to approach building color schemes for data visualization. I have shown a specific method here and worked with the recently released 2022 Pantone Color of the Year, <em>Very Peri<\/em>. The pairing of Pantone\u2019s <em>Very Peri <\/em>with Pantone\u2019s <em>Shamrock<\/em> for a diverging color scheme was my specific preference. You might select another set of colors in building your own diverging color scheme.
